Internationals in 2010

Old adage 3rd time lucky. With injury drop outs, top of the averages performers 2010, Andy Hurworth and Ted Levey swopped around from the ‘next' International ( this team was supposed to be from the 2009 averages, remember?). We all arrived in South Wales at the beautiful amphitheatre and surroundings of Panteg, Pontypool Cricket Club, on a lovely day, the scenery around Pontypool, indeed all the way from Monmouth, is gorgeous and then it actually gets better when you go into the Black Mountains and beyond. A day at Gigrin Farm to watch the Red Kites feeding should be on everybody's wish list!!

What looked like a batsman's paradise turned out to be the bowlers!! With the rains having drained away all the pace and bounce, Colin Breed and Alan Cook couldn't believe their luck. Peter Hall however, is well used to all this and with zero backlift, just used his four shot armoury to very good effect. Without his 64 in 118 balls , Wales would have been looking down the gun barrel, but 141-7 turned out to be a 282-7 on a belter. The Welsh opening attack of Geoff Ellis and Ron Walton (9-4-15-0_ bowled even better than their English counterparts and England 's newcomers, Ted Levey and Andy Hurworth found every ball arrow straight. Levey (7) played on to the long time Glamorgan star Ellis, whose accuracy was reflected in his figures of 9-4-12-1, whilst Hurworth (4) pulled his hamstring and then ran himself out in a mix up with No3 Martin Pearse. England 's score stood at 9 off 9 but Pearse (26) and Micky Swain (20) loosened Wales 's firm grip to take the score to 67 off 28. Both played unnecessary shots having taken the runs needed down to 78 off 112 balls. Captain Andrew ‘Boss' Barnes, however was the first Englishman to trust using his feet, which, he did to good effect and as typical of a Hockey star, punched 7 fours with his Uzi, back past the bowlers, to turn the tables completely on the home team. Aided by Colin Breed (14*) England scraped in by 5 wickets with 21 balls to go.

A great days cricket with superb hospitality from the Welsh team, led by John Morris. It has been announced that Wales will play Australia next year on Monday 22 August with England playing Australia in Yorkshire Friday 19 August and in the Surrey area on Thursday 25 August.
